Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told CNN on Sunday that Americans may have to wear masks until next year and that he cannot predict when things will return to normal in the US.
‘You and the president have suggested that we approach normality by the end of the year. What does normal mean? Asked Dana Bash of CNN. “Do you think Americans will still wear masks in 2022, for example?”
“You know, I think it’s possible,” Fauci said. “And again, it really depends on what you mean, with normality … because if normality means exactly as things were before we came across it, I can not predict it.”
‘But I mean, of course, I think we’re going to have a significant amount of normality, beyond the terrible burden we’re all been going through over the last year, that when we get to autumn and winter, by the end of the “I fully agree with the president that we will approach a degree of normality, whether or not it is exactly as it was in November 2019,” he added. “But it will be much, much better than what we do now.”
Asked why he thinks Americans might have to wear masks next year, Fauci said it depends on the level of the virus in the community.
‘And it’s really important, because it’s coming back to something, that you said. If you see that the level really drops very low, I want it to go further to a baseline that is so low, that there is virtually no threat, or no no, it will never be zero, but a minimal threat that you will be exposed to someone who is infected, ”he said. ‘So if you come together to get most people in the country vaccinated to get the virus level in the community, very, very low, then I believe you will be able to say, you know, for the most part, we do not necessarily have to wear masks. ”

DESCRIPTION:
DANA BASH, CNN HOST: You and the president have suggested that we approach normality by the end of the year. What is normal? Do you think Americans, for example, will still wear masks in 2022?
DR. ANTHONY FAUCI, NIAID DIRECTOR: You know, I think it’s possible that this is the case. And again, these would mean that you have to spend for these processes.
BANA: Right, that’s why I want you to define it.
FAUCI: If normality is exactly the way … No, Dana, that’s important, because if normality means exactly the way things were before we got over it, I can ‘t predict it. But I mean, of course, I think we’re going to have a significant amount of normality, beyond the terrible burden we’re all been going through over the past year, that when we come in the fall and winter, by the end of the year vote I fully agree with the President that we will approach a degree of normality, whether or not it is exactly as it was in November 2019. But it will be much, much better than what we are doing now.
BASH: Why do you think Americans might have to carry until 2022?
FAUCI: You know, because it depends on the level of, or, the dynamics of the virus that is present in the community. And this is really important, because it comes back to something, that you said: if you see that the level is really going down very low, I want it to continue to a baseline that is so low that there is virtually no threat is not, or not no, it will never be zero, but a minimal threat that you will be exposed to someone who is infected. So if you have combined to get most people in the country vaccinated to get the virus level in the community, very, very low, then I believe you will be able to say: you know, for the most part, we do not necessarily have to wear masks. But if we have a virus level that is at that level, it’s much better than it was months and months ago, like 20,000 a day. But it is still a very high level of viruses in the community. I want to see it go far down. If it goes far down. And the vast majority of the people in the population are vaccinated, then I will feel comfortable saying: you know, we have to pull back the masks. We do not have to wear masks.
BASH: Wow. So your timeline takes us out? A year, maybe two years, maybe even longer?
FAUCI: No, I know you, I can ‘t say that, Dana, and I do not want to. I do not want it to be said, because then it is a sound bite that is not true. Well. I say we do not know. We do not know.
