Fact check: Mamata’s edited grip reciting Islamic prayers linked to Netaji’s controversy

West Bengal’s Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday refused to speak during an event in Kolkata to commemorate the 125de birthday of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose after slogans of “Jai Shri Ram” were raised in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

A day after the incident, the official Twitter manual of Bengal BJP posted a clip from a local news channel showing Mamata reciting Islamic prayers. The caption reads: ‘If CM Mamata Banerjee can recite an Islamic prayer during a government event in West Bengal, why does she have a problem being greeted with Jai Shree Ram? Installment? She violated Bengal and insulted Netaji’s legacy by her conduct during the occasion to commemorate Netaji’s anniversary. ”

Various Facebook users also has the 12-second video with similar claims.

India Today Anti Fake News War Room (AFWA) has found that the viral clip is three years old. In that case, Mamata did recite Islamic verses, but she also recited Hindu, Christian and Sikh prayers.

The archived versions of the posts are saved here, here, and here.

After BJP posted the video on Twitter, several users responded with a longer version of the video and pointed out that the viral clip is incomplete and of a 2018 event. From the longer track, we found that the local channel’s graphics on screen mention that the event, Maati Utsav, was held in the Burdwan district.

Considering this as a clue, we found that the full video was uploaded on January 2, 2018 by the YouTube channel “AITC official” with the title, “Bengal CM inaugurates Mati Utsav ‘, 2018 in Mati Tirtha-Krishi Katha “Purba Burdwan”. The YouTube channel allowed the local Bengali news channel “CN News” for the entire 25-minute video.

After 21.28 minutes in the video, Mamata is seen reciting a hymn to the Hindu goddess Durga and saying: ‘Sarba Mangala Mangallye’, and then a prayer calling on ‘Allah’ while praying for everyone’s good health and prosperity.

She then asks God to ‘bless us all’ and sing a Khalsa prayer: ‘Wahe Guru Ji Da Khalsa, Wahe Guru Di Fateh’. She also said at the end of the same occasion: “Saare jahan’s achha Hindustan hamara”.

Maati Utsav was started in 2013 by the West Bengal government to reward farmers across the state.

Therefore, it is found that the twelve seconds of Mamata Banerjee were cut out by her 25 years ago through a 25 minute speech and placed in the wrong context on social media. The same track went viral in 2019 with a similarly misleading claim that was at the time unleash by fact checkers.
