One year later, it will be illegal to fly a drone in the same weight class without the technology. In some contexts, such as flying over a large group of people, drones weighing less than 0.55 pounds must also broadcast their location. If you do not incur the cost of customizing your existing drone with Remote ID, you will still be able to fly it, but only in areas specially designated by the FAA. These areas do not yet exist, and the FAA plans to take applications in 2022.
The FAA says the requirement ” is an important step towards the full integration of drones into the national airspace system, ” and the technology provides’ important information to our national security agencies and law enforcement partners, and other public safety officials ensure. ‘
There are still many details to be worked out. In particular, the FAA does not say how far drones should broadcast their location, nor how manufacturers should integrate the technology into their products. We can expect the people to be sorted out as we get closer to 2022 and 2023.
