Extreme cold causes T-Mobile disruptions in Texas and other parts of the US

If you are not getting a wireless service on your T-Mobile device, you are not the only one. Severe winter weather in Texas and other parts of the U.S. is causing problems with the carrier’s network, and Downdetector has been following more than 1,000 outage reports since 1 p.m. ET.

T-Mobile acknowledged the issue this afternoon. “We are experiencing network problems after severe weather in various parts of the country and especially in Texas,” Ray Neville, the company’s president of technology, said on Twitter. Neville did not say when the carrier expects to resolve the interruptions. AT&T and Verizon (Engadget’s parent company) seem to be going through the same problems, but their problems do not seem to be that widespread.

A Verizon spokesman told Engadget the company was experiencing minor problems due to the common cold. “Verizon’s network is performing well as winter storms sweep across the country, with limited impact on our network operations,” the spokesman said. “In the vast majority of locations, we have generators running, and we are ready to fill generators to ensure that our network continues to serve our customers.” Some parts of Verizon’s fiber infrastructure are down, but the airline says there are crews bringing the Internet back. We’ll update this article when we hear from AT&T.

The majority of T-Mobile outages appear to be in Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Texas is currently going through one of its coldest winters in decades, with temperatures currently below freezing in every part of the state. The unexpected cold and snow wreak havoc in the state’s infrastructure, leaving nearly 3 million customers without power while trying to stay warm.
