Everything we know about the recent drunk driving incidents involving Detroit firefighters

DETROIT There have been two recent incidents of drunken driving involving Detroit firefighters.

The first incident occurred on Feb. 21 when the operator of Squad 6, a heavy rescue engine, crashed into a parked car on the east side of Detroit while responding to a call about a woman who was ill. The firefighter was examined for alcohol and the department said he had tested the legal limit.

Sources said the firefighter and his crew were at a retirement and promotion party at Engine House 50 when the call came in. Sources said that alcohol is consumed at the party.

The second recent incident took place on Monday morning. Acting Chief 5 did not respond to calls about a house fire on the west side of Detroit.

The veteran firefighter was later found trapped in a department SUV hanging over the Lodge Freeway. He was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

“I take it very seriously. It will not be tolerated, “said Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.

Duggan said the department and he himself needed to see tit come and tighten the assistance program for employees.

The Fire Department said they welcomed help.

The woman’s sister was sick in a house on the east side of town. When Detroit Fire Department Squad Six arrived on the scene, a 26-year-old firefighter behind the wheel of a $ 500,000 rescue vehicle hit her car.

The Detroit Fire Department is investigating what they call a meal, but sources call it a big party at Engine 50, on the east side of Detroit.

Sources told the Local 4 Defenders there was drinking, drinking a lot and members of Squad Six were on duty and drove the fire truck to the party.

An SUV from a Detroit fire chief was found early Monday morning above the Lodge Highway in Milwaukee and Baltimore.

The SUV was the head of the Detroit Fire Department 5. A fire chief was arrested Monday. According to sources, the captain drove under the influence.

The incident began Monday morning at 2 a.m. when a call came about a fire on the west side of Detroit at Majestic and Livernois.

The captain was supposed to be at the call, and would serve as head coach of the firefighting operation. Repeated calls were made over the radio, but the captain could not be reached, sources said.

Sources told Local 4 the captain was suspended in 2016 after an incident with codeine not prescribed to him.
