The safety video, which the home managers played for the first time Wednesday, shows Goodman running as the mob enters the Capitol. Goodman passes Romney and leads him off the path of the rioters before heading to the first floor to respond to the offense and distract the crowd of lawmakers.
Romney, from Utah, is a frequent target of criticism from Trump supporters. He was the only Republican to vote in his first indictment last year to convict Trump, and regularly criticized him during his time in politics, both before and after his presidency.
The Democratic Del. Virgin Islands Stacey Plaskett, one of the nine indictment managers, walked senators through the security footage, showing where the rioters violated the Capitol and how close they were to then-Vice President Mike Pence, to whom they were targeting.
“They are coming at the urging of Donald Trump to stop Congress, a separate branch of government, from confirming the outcome of a presidential election,” Plaskett said.
Goodman, now the acting deputy sergeant of the Senate, has already been considered a hero after the previous video emerged of him leading the violent crowd away from the Senate Hall, where Pence did the ceremonial counting of the 2020 election votes.
Footage of the uprising captured by Huffington Post reporter Igor Bobic shows Goodman being chased by a crowd of rioters through a Capitol staircase shortly after they broke into. When he reached a landing, he looked to the left, where he noticed the door to the Senate Hall was still unguarded. Then he led the rioters to the right, away from the legislators and to the officers of the backup.
Some lawmakers have enacted legislation to recognize Goodman with a Congressional gold medal to save lives. The medal is reserved for Americans who have made ‘outstanding achievements and contributions’ in their country.
