Deborah Copaken, author of Netflix’s hit series Emily In Paris, said that the success of her performance in the Golden Globe nominations was blamed on the fact that I may destroy you has been overlooked.
Emily In Paris was one of the surprise packages from Wednesday’s Globes after the program was nominated for best TV series, musical or comedy. The main character, Lily Collins, is also the best actress in a television musical or comedy.
In contrast, Michaela Coel’s blerrie-authentic BBC / HBO-limited series, I may destroy you, was a shock omission, despite the fact that he received an almost universal praise for portraying a woman who put together the events of a night in which she was sexually assaulted.
After reading the snub in Deadline, Copaken tweeted that it was ‘just wrong’. She later elaborates on her comments in a paper for The Guardian, in which she explains that it speaks of something that is rotten in the industry.

Dear @MichaelaCoel: I was a writer for Emily in Paris, but your show has been my favorite show since the advent of TV, and that’s just wrong. I loved that I MAY DESTROY YOU, and I personally thank you for giving us your heart, your mind, your resilience and your humor. https://t.co/5KcTVdkZLQ

Am I excited about it? Emily in Paris has been nominated? Yes. Natural. I have never been close to seeing a Golden Globe statue up close, let alone being nominated for one, ‘Copaken wrote.
‘But the excitement is now sadly tempered by my anger over Coel’s snob. That I may destroy you not getting one Golden Globe nod is not only wrong, but what’s wrong with everything. ”
She added: ‘We need art that reflects all our colors, not just some. But we must also give awards to shows (and music and movies and plays and musicals) that deserve it, regardless of the color of their creators.
‘Is Hamilton great because Lin-Manuel Miranda is Puerto Rican? No. It’s great because it’s clapping. In the same way, how anyone can look I may destroy you and do not call it a brilliant work of art or Michaela Coel as a genius, can not understand me how these decisions are made. ‘
Copaken added it I may destroy you is her favorite show ever. ‘It takes the complicated issue of rape – I’m a survivor of sexual assault myself – and gives it heart, humor, pathos and a story so well put together, that I had to watch it twice, just to understand how Coel did it. ”
