COVID-19 hospitalizations see a slight increase

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – The number of people hospitalized as a result of the new coronavirus has grown based on state data, as tests remain lagging behind due to the New Year holidays.

On Sunday at 10:30 a.m., the Iowa Department of Public Health said 1,121 people who tested positive for COVID-19 were added to the state’s total by Saturday, which now stands at 284,265. A total of 244,022 people are considered recovering from the disease, an increase of 804 people.

No additional people who died from COVID-19 were added to the state’s total. 3,946 people have died from the virus since the pandemic began.

577 people were hospitalized in Iowa due to the disease, a net increase of five people. 120 of the people are in intensive care units, a net increase of one. 52 of the patients require the use of a ventilator, a net decrease of eight. In the 24-hour reporting period, 66 people had just been admitted to Iowa hospitals, which was the lowest number of new admissions since Oct. 19.

An additional 2,634 people reported the test results by public and private laboratories over the past 24 hours, reflecting on the steadily declining number of numbers, probably due to the holiday period. The positivity rate for this group of tests was 42.6%, higher than the previous day’s 34.5%. The positivity rate calculated with this method may differ from the number on the coronavirus dashboard of the state because it uses the number of people tested, not the total number of tests, including people who have been tested repeatedly.

A total of 1,364,344 people in Iowa have been tested since the onset of the pandemic.
