NASCAR officials on Monday issued a one-race suspension to team owner Chip Ganassi for violating the COVID-19 event protocol at Daytona International Speedway this past weekend.

Ganassi violated Section 12.8.1.b of the NASCAR Rulebook, a subsection of the guidelines for members’ conduct that includes compliance with COVID-19 event procedures. Officials said Ganassi’s fine was “to bring a non-essential individual into the competition area that is restricted from the footprint.”

Ganassi was also fined $ 30,000. Pending any appeal, he is banned from this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Chip Ganassi Racing was still allowed its two entries – the number 1 Chevrolet for driver Kurt Busch and the no. 42 Chevy for Ross Chastain – to submit during the event.

In addition, two Cup Series crew heads were fined $ 10,000 after their cars were found Sunday night during the Daytona Road Course with one uninsured lemur each in an investigation into the race. Those who were penalized were crew chief Adam Stevens of race-winning No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota of Christopher Bell, and crew chief Jeremy Bullins for fifth place, Brad Keselowski, in the no. 2-span Penske Ford.
