Chiefs Frank Clark compares Tom Brady to Deshaun Watson when it comes to the field

The strengths of Tom Brady, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, have always been the ability to pick defense out of pocket and his quick release to his open receivers, making him one of the toughest QBs to tackle.

In 2020, Brady was fired only 21 times, which was the eighth least among QBs with at least 300 pass attempts, according to Next Gen Stats. Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes actually took one more bag than Brady, even though he was nearly 20 years younger.

Chiefs defensive chief Frank Clark knows he’s going to cut out his job for him at Super Bowl Sunday to try and take down Brady. He credited the legendary full-back for his elusive pocket in the bag while tearing defense apart.

“Have you ever seen Tom Brady’s shoulders when he’s in the bag? You need to pull up the film for this one,” Clark told the Tampa Bay Times. “His shoulders are crazy sometimes. Like, I do not know. Tom Brady is what, 43? I have nothing against anyone of 43 years or around that age.

TOM BRADY’S ROADMAP AFTER LONG CAREER IS ‘VERY SIMPLE’, WILL FROM FAMER MORTEN ANDERSEN SAY

“Man, to be able to move his shoulders like that, to play 20, 30-something years in the league, for him to be able to move his shoulders like that, is quite amazing. Me and [defensive tackle] Chris Jones talks about it all the time. I think Chris missed a bag because [Brady], like, shrugged his shoulders in a certain way. Chris missed him completely like he did. ‘

Clark compared Brady to current Houston Texans fullback Deshaun Watson, who is one of the best backs in the NFL when it comes to scrambling and expanding plays. This is quite a comparison, especially since Watson is more athletic than Brady.

“I think Deshaun Watson is the best,” Clark said. ‘You see Tom Brady in that bag sometimes. You can’t really see the difference. ‘

Meanwhile, Clark is not the only member of the Chiefs defense unit who marvels at Brady.

“He’s been doing it for 21 years or so, so he knows how not to go down,” Chiefs defense defender Tanoh Kpassagnon added. “He moves his shoulders and he goes out of your way. Not the same as Pat – Pat is a very different animal – but Tom is really skilled in the bag. So it’s really [a matter of] push that bag so he can go nowhere. ‘

It will be interesting to see how defense coordinator Steve Spagnuolo attacks Brady at Super Bowl Sunday. What makes the game worth watching is that the veteran coach is no stranger to creating schemes to try and stop Brady. Spagnuolo was in charge of the New York Giants’ “Big Blue” defense in 2007 when they upset the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.
