Chicago shooting: Police officer on duty was ambushed, shot in Calumet Heights

CHICAGO (WLS) – Chicago police are looking for at least two gunmen who led an officer into a trap and shot him in the abdomen as he was sitting in his Jeep in the Calumet Heights neighborhood on Monday.

The officer was stopped at a traffic light in the 8900 block of South Stony Island Avenue at about 12:21 while he was in service in his personal vehicle when the suspects pulled in behind and next to the vehicle and fired shots inside and wounded the officer. . in the lower body, said David Brown, Chicago police chief.

Shotspotter alerted tactical teams responding to the scene and transported the officer to the University of Chicago Medical Center.

According to doctors, the 32-year-old officer was operated on Monday afternoon and is now in a reasonable condition.

“He has remained stable throughout the case and is currently doing well,” he said. Susan Rowell, a trauma surgeon at the University of Chicago Medical Center, said.

Supt. David Brown said thanks to the swift action of three female officers, he was able to get help quickly.

“Without their intervention and thinking quickly to get him transported as quickly as possible, they brought him into surgery and probably saved his life,” Brown said.

“We have heard some rumors about a hijacking. We do not know yet,” Supt. David Brown said. “Circumstances indicate different narratives of what it could be, it could be a misidentification, and it could be road rage, or a hood. We just do not know, it’s too early to tell it given the circumstances.”

There are several businesses in the area that may have captured the incident on a surveillance video. Police said they also wanted to see if anything had been captured on the city’s security cameras.

“Unfortunately, this event reminds us of the dangers our officers face every day, whether on duty or not,” Mayor Lightfoot said.

The wounded officer has been with the department for four years and works from the 4th district. Supt. Brown described him as hardworking and well-meaning by his colleagues.

“It was an avalanche of offers,” Supt. Brown said. “We really had to sign the stop sign, because obviously people kept coming, kept coming.”

This officer is the second Chicago police officer to be shot and wounded within 24 hours.

On Sunday, a sergeant in Chicago picked up a pasture after being shot at in the parking lot of the Gresham police station.

According to officials, the sergeant picked up a pasture and was brought to Christ Medical Center in good condition. The sergeant was discharged from the hospital later Sunday night.

“It just underscores the dangers. We all need to be aware of our environment. We need to have real consequences for offenders when we catch them,” Superintendent Brown told a news conference Monday afternoon.

No suspects are in custody. Area Two detectives investigated.
