Britt Reid is charged with DWI for an accident that left a 5-year-old girl with a brain injury in February, but the child’s family said Monday it was not enough.
Tiffany Verhulst, the cousin of 5-year-old Ariel Young, who was the victim of the crash, told USA Today she still believes the former Kansas City Chiefs coach can get away with it.
“We do not believe the charges are fair or severe enough,” Verhulst told the newspaper. ‘It was incredibly difficult to know that he was living his normal life every day and Ariel’s life was completely changed.

“Our whole family’s life changed because he decided to drink and drive.”
Verhulst set up a donation page for Ariel when the accident occurred. It raised more than $ 545,000 to cover medical expenses.
Tom Porto, the lawyer for the family, told the newspaper that Ariel was discharged from hospital on April 2.
“The hope is that her brain injury in children will heal better in a familiar environment. From now on, she still cannot walk or talk and is dependent on a feeding tube for basic nutrition,” he said.
Reid, 35, is charged with driving while intoxicated, a Class D crime said, the Jackson County Attorney’s Office said Monday. The son of Chiefs’ head coach, Andy Reid, could face up to seven years in prison if convicted. Prosecutors said they were requesting a $ 100,000 mortgage.
The crash happened near the southern driveway of Interstate 435 a day before the Chiefs left for the Super Bowl, according to WDAF, the Fox-affiliated TV station in Kansas City.

Police found a car driver in a Chevrolet Impala and were on the driveway where an appeal was made. According to the police report, the hazard lights flashed, but the car’s battery started to run low when a family member arrived in a Chevrolet Traverse and parked near them with their headlights on.
The TV station, referring to accident documents, reported that a white Dodge pickup truck driven by Reid was traveling south on the driveway to reach the Interstate when it hit the Impala and hit the Traverse from behind. Reid allegedly drove about 84 km / h in a zone of 65 km / h moments before the accident.
The driver of the Impala was in the car at the time of the accident and was not injured. While two adults in the Traverse were also unharmed, the five-year-old was in the back seat of the Traverse and was seriously injured.
Reid told respondents that he had been drinking and was on prescription for Adderall. According to WDAF, police conducted a sobriety test and found four clues of impairment. Reid was also admitted to the hospital due to an injured groin. Although there were no names in the initial accident report, the WDAF documents agree with the details of the accident.
