Celtics signing Jabari Parker reportedly will resign from Moritz Wagner

The Celtics sign veteran forward Jabari Parker, Shams Charania, The Athletic, reported Friday. In order to make way for Parker, Boston will relinquish center Moritz Wagner.

Parker’s deal will be a two-year deal that includes his contract next season, Charania added.

Parker, who was selected as the No. 2 overall in the 2014 NBA draft, mostly did not live up to expectations over the course of his seven-year career. In his first four seasons with the Bucks, he averaged 15.3 points per game and a career high of 20.1 points per game in the 2016-17 season.

Since his rookie contract with the Bucks ended in 2018, Parker has jumped into the league. He scored 14.5 points per game with the Bulls and Wizards in 2018-19. Parker signed with the Hawks before the 2019-20 season, averaging 15 points per game in Atlanta before trading with the Kings in February that season.

Parker has not had much playing time in Sacramento, and has seen just nine games in action over the past two seasons. The Kings relinquished him in March, qualifying him to play in this season’s playoff game.

In Boston, Parker will join Evan Fournier, Semi Ojeyele, Romeo Langford, Aaron Nesmith and Grant Williams as wingers coming off the bench.

As for Wagner, his time in Boston ends after just three weeks with the team. The Celtics acquired Wagner with center Luke Kornet by the deadline in an agreement with the Bulls, which gave up center Daniel Theis and forward Javonte Green.

After his first four games in Boston, Wagner’s only playing time came in the final minutes of games already decided. He has not played in three of the Celtics’ last five games. Wagner entered Thursday’s game against the Lakers in the fourth quarter with the Celtics’ lead of more than 20 points, but he played poorly. He committed three times and two fouls and was a minus 20 for the five-minute piece he played, which forced Brad Stevens to pull him out so the Celtics could claim the victory.
