Colton Underwood’s Coming Out may have two truths. Listen to both of them

GMA18 (Photo by Paula Lobo / Walt Disney Television via Getty Images) COLTON UNDERWOOD In a Good Morning America interview on Wednesday, former Bachelor head Colton Underwood reveals that he’s gay to host Robin Roberts, and describes his struggle to process his sexuality while growing up in a conservative, Catholic community. During the interview, Underwood apologized publicly to Cassie Randolph, his ex-girlfriend and former Bachelor contestant. The couple tore back in May 2020, but their friendly separation eventually soured. In September 2020, a restraining order was granted to Randolph, when the public learned that Underwood had sent Randolph and her family ‘disturbing’ text messages and arrived uninvited at her and her parental homes and that he even had a tracking device on her car. The restraining order was dropped a month later after Underwood and Randolph reached a ‘private agreement’. While it’s good that Underwood can live authentically now, fans of the franchise have shown on Twitter that he’s getting a cute Bachelor version in this situation – and his former behavior is in danger of being swept under the rug. . Shortly after the interview aired, for example, executive producers of The Bachelor expressed public support for Underwood in a statement that read: ‘We are so inspired by Colton Underwood’s courage to embrace and pursue his authentic self. As steadfast believers in the power of love, we celebrate Colton’s journey in the LGBTQIA + community every step of the way. Underwood’s apology seemed sincere, and he can go on to show that he has changed. But granting Underwood a glowing bow of salvation now may indicate to Randolph and other people who may have lived through similar events that their experiences were unimportant. ‘[Underwood] and his battle with his sexuality is going to be the highlight, as opposed to an investigation into the character that leads to abuse of others, ‘says Veronique Valliere, PsyD, a psychologist who advises perpetrators and victims of sexual assault, to Refinery29. The statement from the Bachelor executives is also notable for the fact that the well-known director’s program did not exactly do its part to support (or even represent) members of the foreign community. They may say they are celebrating Underwood’s journey, but there was virtually no LGBTQIA + representation on the ABC show, with the exception of a handful of bisexual women. The Bachelor seizing the opportunity that Underwood gave them to be ‘allies’ is empty and ultimately disappointing. Underwood’s inner struggle and unrest were undoubtedly painful for him to go through, and did him great harm – he even opened up to Roberts about suicidal thoughts. But his actions led his former partner to fear for her safety, which is inexcusable. “The phrase ‘Tormented people hurt people’ comes to mind, ‘tweeted Brett S. Vergara, a bachelor’s supporter,’ and although the context sheds light on the situation, it does not change, change or diminish it. even the hurt and pain caused by those actions. . I hope Cassie is supported today by those close to her. ‘Dr Valliere points out that we tend to treat situations like these as: or: Underwood may fall victim to his own oppressive upbringing and our unacceptable culture; or he’s a bad guy for his actions in the past. But he can be both. “He must address his unrest and come to peace with himself and his sexuality,” says Dr. Valliere, “but he must also deal with the piece of himself that feels justified in abusing someone else.” If you are experiencing domestic violence, please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or TTY 1-800-787-3224 for confidential support.
