A 68-year-old Canadian woman in British Columbia was found dead outside her home on Sunday after walking back from her neighbor’s house in the extreme cold.

The temperature in the evening was -43.6 degrees Fahrenheit.
“The investigation established that the deceased; a woman (68 years old) had been visiting her friend and neighbor the night before where she had been drinking alcohol. She left the friend’s house around 1am, but tragically it does again inside her own house, “said ao. Damon Werrell said in a press release.

The statement added: “She was discovered by her friend the next morning, and it is at this time that emergency services are being called.”

There is a warning for extremely cold weather in British Columbia this week.
“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk,” reads a statement on the Canadian government’s website. “Cover. Frostbite can develop on exposed skin within minutes, especially with wind cold.”
The advice continues: ‘Extremely cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind colds cause an increased health risk, such as frostbite and hypothermia.’

Residents are also expected to travel with at least one other person or keep in touch with friends or family if they have to leave their home.
The Royal Canadian Mountain Police in British Columbia declined to comment further on the woman’s death as the investigation with the BC Coroner’s Service is ongoing.
The BC Coroners Service did not immediately respond to a request from PEOPLE for comment.
