California Coronavirus Vaccination Site Gives Thousands Wrong Vaccination

It is estimated that 4,300 people in California received a smaller coronavirus vaccine than they should have had due to a problem with syringes.

According to KTVU, the Oakland Coliseum syringe received orange syringes that stuck a third of the vaccine to the bottom of the plastic container. The problem was finally detected on Monday, but individuals vaccinated before that point apparently received only 0.2 ml of the Pfizer vaccine instead of the optimal 0.3 ml.

The California Office of Emergency Services, which helps manage the site with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said high-level meetings were held Tuesday afternoon after whistleblowers alerted the issue.

Brian Ferguson, spokesman for Cal OES, reportedly said he did not think anyone was formally overdosed and that it was not necessary to contact the individuals who received the lower vaccine.

On Wednesday, he said authorities had been told the dosage fell within medical guidelines and protocols.

Dr Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease expert, said he believed patients were likely to be protected and that they could make up for the lost dose in the second round of vaccine dosing.

The incident came as Governor Gavin Newsom expressed optimism about the state’s vaccination efforts.
