After the turbulent year, you may find it difficult at this point to be surprised by anything, but the Golden Globes this morning were aimed at proving the concept wrong.
The Hollywood Foreign Association on Wednesday gave rise to insomnia everywhere and unveiled nominations for the seemingly semi-virtual bicoastal ceremony on Feb. 28 on NBC. After Tina Fey and Amy Poehler skipped the host duties for all the reign of Donald Trump’s horrors and mistakes, they are back for the fourth time this year, their first since 2015.
In addition, the nominations will inevitably be more interesting than usual, as the coronavirus pandemic has ruined the production schedules. Heavyweights like last year’s big winners Succession and The wonderful Mrs. Maisel was then removed from the mixture.

Norman Lear and Jane Fonda also picked up another HFPA spring in their stride, even before today. The living legends are the recipients of the Carol Burnett Award and the Cecil B de Mille Award for Hollywood Impact at the 78th Golden Globes, respectively, later this month. For some living legends like Sophia Loren, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, however, it was a disappointment this morning.
Here are the big incidents and surprises for this year’s Globes nominations of the less than 90 HFPA members:
Tom Hanks – The multi-Oscar winner and last year’s Cecil B DeMille winner took on the Battle of the Atlantic Greyhound and America after the Civil War in News from the world, but his double shot fired with the HFPA spaces.

I may destroy you The disturbing and sometimes hilarious drama of sexual assault and the aftermath of the BBC and HBO, Michaela Coel, was one of the most acclaimed performances of last year and was top in my Top 10 New Shows of 2020. Cricket this morning as it was at Globes nominations are coming, damning crickets.
Spike Lee – Da 5 bloods Delroy Lindo, Clarke Peters and Chadwick Boseman had excellent performances, among others, but it just wasn’t enough for the passionate Vietnam War film or its groundbreaking director to receive love. Shocker.
Zendaya – The Euphoria star’s outstanding performance with John David Washington in the closing film Malcolm & Mare was completely excluded.
Meryl Streep – Tell me, did you think it was a different Meryl Stripe after 32 other Globes nominations? Prom and Let them all talk?
Netflix
Bridgerton – The absence of the Regency era produced by Shonda Rhymes has proven that the Golden Globes are not just a popularity contest. Otherwise, Netflix’s Bridgerton would have cleaned up in all categories this morning and probably on February 28th.
Sophia Loren – The screen icon is back with the award-winning Life ahead. The Netflix movie was named Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Song, which is why it’s a mystery why the megastar was a dead end to Globes voters.
Never have I ever – The Mindy Kaling co-founder of the educational drama was a worldwide hit on Netflix, but nada in terms of nominations.
Jurnee Smollett – You actually saw Lovecraft Country, right? How, then, can Misha Green’s HBO program be nominated for Best TV Series, but leave the star out? And what about Jonathan Majors and Michael K Williams, for that matter?
Al Pacino – In a long career full of highlights, Pacino’s nomination today for the unintended comic hunters looks like bad jokes and a big surprise – whether or not you look at the history of the Globes.
A24
Steven Yeun – Sundance 2020 Grand Jury Prize Winner Minari received a strong thumbs up this morning from the AFI and the National Board of Review and a nomination for best foreign language film – yet the leading man of the film was left empty-handed.
The Midnight Sky – Aside from a mention of the best original score, it seems to have been pretty dark for the post-apocalyptic drama of Netflix directed by George Clooney.
Chris Rock – The comedian was at his dramatic best as the ambitious crime boss in Kansas City in the fourth season of Fargo. In the case of Rock, it appears that crime is not paid for with Globes voters.
P Valley – The Starz strip club drama starring Tony nominee Katori Hall was half a dozen NAACP Image Awards names, and was not a player today.
Kate Hudson – Sia’s debut as a director, Music is not even out yet and not on many people’s radar. Yet, in the wild and star-studded world of the HFPA, it did not prevent the film from achieving a best film comedy / musical and a best film comedy / musical Actress for the Almost known star
Yellowstone – The top series on cable has never wrestled so much recognition for awards, it’s true. The final season of the Kevin Costner starring, starring Taylor Sheridan, co-created with Taylor Sheridan, nevertheless left nothing to be desired, despite being used the best of the series.
Starting point – The Christopher Nolan-directed thriller was the only major play in the city and in theaters during the first part of the pandemic. As for main categories, today, like the main plot of the film, it felt as if the past never happened.
Lakeith Stanfield – Daniel Kaluuya rightly nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Fred Panther leader. So true was the nod to his Judas and the Black Messiah co-star? You know his Black History Month, right?
Ben Affleck – There was a lot of pressure for The way back actor. A pressure that hit a roadblock of no recognition this morning.
