The president-elect’s team also canceled an Amtrak trip from Wilmington to Washington scheduled for Monday due to major security issues.
The presidential inauguration committee declined to comment on the changes, and the Secret Service and the Joint Congress Committee on Inauguration Ceremonies did not respond to requests for comment.
Biden’s team also urged Lisa Monaco, a former homeland security adviser to the Obama administration, to serve as temporary security adviser around the inauguration. Monaco, who has nominated Biden to serve as deputy attorney general, has suspended her nomination activities while she is in the transition to security matters.
‘Me. Monaco will assist the elected president and work with the incoming national security adviser, the incoming domestic security adviser and current security and law enforcement officials, including with the U.S. Secret Service on their plans for the inauguration, ” a spokesman for the transition said in a statement. “Given the existing threats, Mrs Monaco’s temporary role will focus exclusively on the period before the inauguration.”
Biden received an information session on Wednesday about the threats from the FBI, the secret service and national security officers.
“In the week since the attack on Congress by a mob that includes domestic terrorists and violent extremists,” Biden’s transition team said in a statement, “the country has continued to learn more about the threat to our democracy. “In the coming days, both in the national capital region and in cities across the country, this is a challenge that the elected president and his team are taking incredibly seriously.”
