BERLIN (AP) – A man has been arrested in Berlin on allegations that he made radio contact with air traffic, including police helicopters, and gave false flight instructions while being an aviation officer, German police said on Friday.
The 32-year-old man, whose identity has not been released in accordance with German privacy laws, was arrested in the eastern Koepenick district of the capital on Thursday night, police said.
Police were able to flood into his apartment after making contact with a police helicopter that was sent to the neighborhood in hopes of flushing him out.
During a search of his home, police found two radios sent on the frequencies needed to make contact with aircraft.
“For anyone who asked about our police helicopter operations in Koepenick, an unusual arrest,” tweeted police in Berlin, with a link to more details.
The man allegedly made contact with pilots of passenger and transport planes, as well as state and federal police helicopters, for the past six months, who gave ‘potentially dangerous’ instructions and became increasingly professional with his communications.
It is known that no accidents or other incidents were caused by his actions, police said.
