BAFTA Awards 2021 Winners Announced

Elsewhere, Anthony Hopkins starred in ‘The Father’ (which also won a adapted screenplay), Daniel Kaluuya won Best Supporting Actor and the promising young woman won an excellent British film and original screenplay.

Nomadland on Sunday, the second and final night of the 2021 BAFTA Film Awards emerged as the overall winner.

Chloe Zhao’s exploration of the nomadic community in the American West won the Best Picture award, plus the lead role for Frances McDormand, director for Zhao and Best Picture for Joshua James Richards. Celebrating her victory, Zhao later said she would be ‘a lot of hangover’ on Monday morning. She added: “It’s never too early to get drunk in California.”

Elsewhere, there was a wide spread of love, with four films coming home with duels.

Anthony Hopkins won the Leading Actor Award for his performance in Florian Zeller The father, who also provided the statuette for the best processed screenplay. Emerald Fennell’s Promising young woman claims excellent British film and original screenplay, and Pixar’s Soul won for animation and original score. Meanwhile, the ceremony held on Saturday night – which mostly focused on the categories of crafts – Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom picks up two awards, for makeup and hair, and costume design. Bukky Bakray, the lead star of Sarah Gavron’s Brit drama Rocks, won the award for rising stars, while the film also won for cast.

In other categories, Daniel Kaluuya won Best Supporting Actor for Judas and the Black Messiah, while Yuh-Jung Youn won Best Supporting Actor for Minari. In the evening’s most comical moment, Youn joked that the award was especially meaningful to her because Brits was ‘snobbish’.

Both Saturday and Sunday ceremonies were held from the Royal Albert Hall, with nominees virtually joining. Sunday’s event, which was the longer of the two, also featured several musical performances, and Ang Lee also received the BAFTA Fellowship Award, the highest honor from the British Academy.

On the way to the awards, Nomadland and Rocks was tied, with seven nominations each, with The father, Mank, Minari and Promising young woman just behind with six.

The nominees, announced in February, are also considered the most diverse in BAFTA’s history, with 16 of the 24 actors nominated in the categories of performance, coming from racial or ethnic minority backgrounds, and a record of four women were the best director.
