Auburn athletics community responds to Gus Malzahn’s UCF work

Minutes after UCF soccer coach Gus Malzahn opened his inaugural press conference, Auburn’s Bruce Pearl coach tweeted, “BOOM!”

Minutes later, Pearl started its own press conference. Before discussing the upcoming basketball game between Auburn and Mississippi State, he took a moment to explain that “BOOM!” was indeed a congratulation to his friend Malzahn rather than a recruitment announcement (Malzahn always tweeted a ‘tree’ after Auburn received a commitment).

“UCF gets an excellent coach and a better man,” Pearl said. ‘As much as anyone, I’m happy for the student-athletes there, because he’s going to make a difference in their lives. So stay tuned for Gus. ”

Pearl was not the only one to express his delight that Malzahn ended up in a good spot after being sacked from Auburn in December 2020. Former and current Auburn players who coach Malzahn shared the news on Instagram and Twitter after Malzahn was appointed on Monday. Some simply shared UCF’s posts, while others added a message.

Here’s how people reacted:

Daniel Thomas, former Auburn safety, current Jacksonville Jaguar

Darius Slayton, former Auburn wide receiver, current New York Giants receiver

Roger McCreary, senior cornerback of Auburn

McCreary began his junior year under Malzahn. He could have declared for the NFL draft, but despite the coaching change, he decided to return for a senior season. He quickly tweeted the news about Malzahn’s new job again and shared the video of Malzahn and his wife living in Orlando, Fl.

Former linebacker Deshaun Davis also tweeted UCF’s Twitter announcement.

Several players shared UCF’s welcome message on their Instagram stories. These players include Shaun Shivers, former running back, former wide receiver Anthony Schwartz, second wide receiver Kobe Hudson, second wide receiver Ja’Varrius Johnson, senior safety Smoke Monday and second attacking linebacker Keiondre Jones. Former full-back Devin Adams has added a message.

The players who did this include former safety Jamien Sherwood, junior linebacker Owen Pappoe, former wide receiver Eli Stove, senior linebacker Zakoby McClain and second defensive line Colby Wooden.
