Athletics to Get Cole Irvin

Athletics picks up the left hand Cole Irvin in exchange for cash considerations in an agreement with the Phillies, reports Jon Heyman of MLB Network (Twitter link). Irvin’s departure will make a place on the 40-man list Matt Moore, who earlier this week signed a one-year deal. Another move will be needed to accommodate Didi Gregorius‘addition to the timetable once its two-year agreement has been finalized.

Irvin (tomorrow 27) has played nineteen MLB games (three starts) over the past two seasons. Over 45.2 overs he has a 6.75 ERA / 4.87 SIERA. He does not miss many bats; its 17.2% strike percentage is well below the league average of 23.4%. However, Irvin set a long record of strikes among minors and continued at the highest level, running only 6.9% of opposing hitters as a major investor.

The Southpaw is twice among Baseball America’s thirty best prospects in the Phillies system. He still has one minor league option left, meaning the A’s could move him between the majors and Triple-A Las Vegas if he survives the season in the 40s.
