Athletics To Draw Yusmeiro Petit

Athletics re-signed the right-hander Yusmeiro Petit a one-year contract, reports Ken Rosenthal, The Athletic (Twitter link). The agreement will be official as soon as Petit reaches a physical agreement. According to MLBTR’s Steve Adams, Petit will earn $ 2.55 million in guaranteed money, with another $ 450,000 in incentive bonuses. Petit is represented by Godoy Sports.

Petit returns for his fourth season with Oakland, a term of office that was nothing short of successful for both parties. Petit has an ERA of 2.73 over 197 2/3 innings in an A uniform and was a workhorse of the bull – 154 appearances in 2018-19 and then 26 appearances during the shortened 2020 season.

Petit is far from a Statcast darling and does not hold many strikes, as evidenced by its below-average K% over the past three years. However, Petit’s run rate of 4.14% over the same piece is elite, and he does not allow much hard contact. All in all, Petit consistently outperformed its peripherals; his 3.89 SIERA of 2018-20 is higher than his actual ERA during the past three seasons.

Not the fact that many released relievers attracted a lot of attention this winter, but there was not much in public about Petit, perhaps due to his advanced statistics and his age (36). The A’s were the only team known to have an interest in Petit, and a reunion was perhaps inevitable in a sense, although Petit took a drop from his previous salary. The Fair won a two-year, $ 10 million deal with Oakland earlier in November 2017, which ended up being a three-year, $ 14.5 million deal after Athletics exercised their club option on Petit for the 2020 season.

Between Petit and new acquisitions Sergio Romo and Adam Kolarek, Oakland has suddenly added a lot of reinforcements over the past three days. Assistance was a major strength for the A’s in 2020, but it was a position that had to be addressed since then Liam Hendriks and Joakim Soria depart in free agency.
