Asian woman assaulted in Midtown for possible hate crime

An Asian woman was randomly assaulted in Manhattan on Sunday afternoon in a possible attack on hate crime, police and sources said.

The 41-year-old victim was grabbed from behind and thrown to the ground when she was walking along West 31st Street near Sixth Avenue around 1pm, police said.

The suspect, a 37-year-old woman, shouted something in Spanish at the victim during the attack, according to police sources.

The victim turned down the police and later helped them locate her attacker near the intersection of the crime scene.

Police said they arrested the suspect and are investigating the incident as a possible prejudice crime. No charges were filed late Sunday.

The Big Apple is experiencing an increase in attacks on people of Asian descent. Last year, there were 28 such racially motivated attacks compared to just two in 2019.
