Asian hate crimes in NYC skyrocketed in March; murders jumped by 36%, police say

Crime in New York increased in March compared to the same time last year, with 36% homicides and a marked increase in hate crimes against Asian Americans, police said.

Hate crimes against Asian Americans skyrocketed last month, with 31 hate crimes reported in March 2021, and no one reported the same month in 2020, the New York Police Department (NYPD) said Tuesday.

The Big Apple also had a 36% increase in homicides in March 2021, when 34 were reported compared to the 25 homicides the previous year. Police also said the number of shootings had risen from 56 to 99, or an increase of almost 77%.

The total index crime increased slightly in March 2021, with an increase of 2.4% year-on-year, according to NYPD statistics. The number of robberies and burglaries reported during the month was nonetheless compared to March 2020.

Police saw an overall decline in March – albeit by only 3%. But the NYPD also saw a 40% increase in hate crimes against individuals based on their sexual orientations, as well as hate crimes as those classified as ‘ethnic’ and ‘other’, police said.

In one of the more notable incidents, a 65-year-old woman was the victim of an unresolved March 29 attack that led to his church in Manhattan.

Her attacker, later identified as 38-year-old Brandon Elliot, repeatedly kicked and punched the woman, telling her, “F — you, you do not believe here, you Asian …” according to law enforcement documents and officials. Elliot was ordered to be held without bail on charges of second-degree assault as a hate crime and first-degree assault as a hate crime.

According to records, Elliot, who was on parole for the murder of his mother, is currently being held on Rikers Island.
