Apple urges iPhone, iPad users to update operating system immediately after security breach ‘actively exploited’

Apple on Tuesday issued a new warning urging iPhone and iPad users to immediately update their device software to the newly released iOS and iPad 14.4.

The update comes in an attempt to fix three security bugs that “may have been actively exploited”. Apple has credited an ‘anonymous researcher’ for finding the bugs, according to its support website.

One of the security issues found is a malicious application that could potentially increase privileges at its core, the framework for Apple’s operating system. Apple said the issue was addressed in the new update with “improved closure”.

The other two vulnerabilities were found in WebKit, a web browser engine used by Safari and other applications, which could allow a remote attacker to ‘execute arbitrary code’. The logical issue was addressed in the new update with ‘enhanced limitations’.

The security flaws have an impact on the iPhone 6s and later, the iPad Air 2 and later, the iPad mini 4 and later, and the iPod touch (7th generation).

However, other details, such as who was actively exploiting the vulnerabilities, who could have been the victim, or whether the attack was on a specific set of users or widespread, were unclear. Apple has noted that it will provide an update as soon as more details can be made available.

An Apple spokesman did not immediately return a request for comment from FOX Business.
