Apple TV + won the rights to the hot Sundance movie ‘CODA’, which premieres at the film festival on Friday. The film received a warm reception from early viewers and critics.
As reported by Deadline, a bid war for the film raised prices to a new record for Sundance film, with Apple securing the deal for $ 25 million.
At $ 25 million for global rights, Apple’s acquisition of CODA is the largest deal ever reached with Sundance, which concluded its $ 22.5 million acquisition of Palm Springs by Hulu last year.
CODA is a drama feature that follows a high school boy, Ruby, played by Emilia Jones, who is the only person in her family who is not deaf. She must choose to pursue her dreams in the music industry, or to stay at home to help her parents.
Apple has expanded its original film division, with the streamer having the most important properties in the bag. In 2020, Apple TV + ‘Greyhound’, ‘On The Rocks’, ‘The Banker’ and the animated film ‘Wolfwalkers’ debuted, with the latter potential to win the Oscar for best animated film.
The streaming service just released a new movie yesterday: “Palmer,” starring Justin Timberlake. And another award-winning ‘Cherry’ starring Tom Holland will hit Apple TV + in March.
Apple will announce another release date for CODA, but since the film has already been filmed and finished, you can expect to see it premiere later in 2021.
Other big upcoming Apple movies include ‘Emancipation’ (which Apple acquired the rights to produce in another record deal last year), Martin Korsers ” Killers of the Flower Moon ‘,’ Kitbag ‘by Ridley Scott,’ The Sky Is Everywhere ‘in collaboration with A24, “Swan Song” and others.
