A newly released set of security solutions from Apple is “recommended for all users”, which means that it’s probably time for an update for anyone with an iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Watch.

According to Apple, the patch will fix a security flaw that left WebKit – the engine that powers Apple’s Safari browser – vulnerable to memory corruption. Once users have visited a web page with the malicious code, the vulnerability could be exploited by attackers, who could then gain access to the affected device and write malicious code on it.

If the security solutions are applied, users of iPhones and iPads will do so be update to iOS and iPadOS 14.4.1, watchOS users would be updated to 7.3.2 in MacOS Big Sur would be updated to version 11.2.3.

Despite being reported by Google and Microsoft, the bugs are not thought to be actively exploited – other than the three separate zero-day security bugs discovered in January. All three previous errors have Apple was then ‘actively exploited’ by hackers who found a way to link the three vulnerabilities to gain access to the underlying iPhone software.

Apple users can secure their devices by going to System Preferences, en then click on Software update to see if one is available.
