Animal Crossing: New Horizons Sets One Year of Nintendo of Europe Sales Year

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has managed to sell an annual record for Nintendo of Europe, selling 7 million units since its launch in 2020.

According to information from Nintendo shared with GamesIndustry.biz, game sales account for about one-third of all Switch owners in Europe. Nintendo’s investor site puts the total sales figures for the game at just over 31 million, meaning about 24 million copies have been sold in other regions. Super Smash Bros.Ultimate set a short-term launch record for Europe earlier in 2018, but it does not appear that Nintendo has specified whether the game would also hold the one-year record.

A few factors probably made it easier for Animal Crossing to set the new record. Aside from the praise and overall popularity of the series, it was released three years after the Switch was first introduced, meaning there was a larger player base for the game outside the gate. Of course, COVID-19 also kept people indoors all year round, and New Horizons enabled them to stay connected. Some politicians even recommended it early in the pandemic. Before a policy change from Nintendo, some, like current President Biden, even used the game for their campaigns.

It helped that Animal Crossing: New Horizons also got a steady stream of content updates. We just got ‘Shamrock Day’ items coming out on St. Patrick’s Day based, make their way to the game, and tomorrow come ‘Bunny Day’ items with the Easter theme. Even Mario could not stay off the island, with his own treats available to celebrate the latest Switch version of the franchise, and you have to be careful with the items from the April Fools Day that appear in the next update.
