Alexey Navalny has been transferred to a penal colony, says the Russian prison service

The exact location and name of the penal colony was not disclosed, but Alexander Kalashnikov of the Russian Federal Criminal Service (FSIN) told reporters: “According to the court decision, he has left for where he should be at present. Everything is being done within the framework of the legislation and the current legislation. ‘

Kalashnikov added Navalny would be held in ‘absolutely normal circumstances’.

Alexey Navalny remains in jail for dismissing his appeal. Then he was fined $ 11,500 in defamation

Navalny’s lawyers told CNN on Thursday that he had been moved from the Matrosskaya Tishina detention center in Moscow, but no information was provided to Navalny’s team or his family to which he had moved.

Marina Litvinovich of Moscow’s Public Monitoring Commission (UNC), which monitors the treatment of prisoners, told CNN that Navalny should be sent to a “general regime” colony, the most common type of prison in Russia.

Litvinovich says prisoners are not usually held in cells, but sleep in dormitories and are divided into groups. She added that inmates can work if they prefer.

Russian authorities have classified Navalny as a flight risk – a characterization that has ridiculed the activist – which is why Litvinovich says he may be under special surveillance or search.
