A Taiwanese man fined $ 47,000 for violating home quarantine

(CNN) – A Taiwanese man has been fined $ 1 million New Taiwan Dollars ($ 35,000) for repeatedly violating his home quarantine.

The unnamed man, who lives in Taichung in central Taiwan, quarantined a house in his apartment building after returning from a business trip to mainland China and violating it at least seven times, according to local media.

According to TTV News, the man left his apartment building seven times in just three days to go shopping, get his car ready and more. He reportedly had an argument with one of his neighbors when they confronted him about leaving his home during quarantine.

The local government in Taichung confirmed that the man returned from the mainland on January 21. The Taiwanese regulations require that 14 days be quarantined.

Lu Shiow-yen, mayor of Taichung, denounced it as a “serious offense”, adding that the man should “receive severe punishment”.

In addition to the fine – which is the highest ever levied in Taiwan – the man will have to pay $ 3000 NTD ($ 107) per day for the cost of his quarantine. The Taiwanese government reimburses quarantines $ 1,000 NTD ($ 35) per day, for which it is no longer eligible.

Taiwan was one of the biggest success stories in the world as it contains the coronavirus. The self-governing island closed its border early, implemented mass tests and contact detection and strictly enforced quarantines.
In December 2020, a migrant worker from the Philippines was fined $ 3,500 for violating his quarantine for a total of eight seconds. The man, who was in a quarantined hotel, walks into the hallway outside his room for a short while and is caught on circuit television.

As a result of this strict control, the island of 23 million people recorded only 889 cases of coronavirus and seven deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

CNN’s Shanshan Wang reported.
