A man involved in the fatal shooting in north Houston by the officer who responded to the scene, police say

HOUSTON A Houston police officer shot dead a man on Monday after the man shot dead one person and swung a gun at a store, police said.

The shooting was reported at about 2.20pm near the intersection of North Main and 43rd Street.

According to Houston Police Assistant Chief Troy Finner, the man shot dead a person in the 8500 block of North Main Street before walking into a nearby convenience store and swinging his gun.

According to Finner, an officer responded to the scene and the man started shooting at the officer. He said the officer fired back and hit the gunman. He said the officer was not injured and the man was taken to hospital for treatment. He said the man was listed in a critical condition.

According to Finner, investigators are trying to determine if the man knows the person who was shot and killed.

The man who was shot by the officer has not yet been identified.

Finner said the officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative duties, which is standard.
