1. Immigration

2. Coronavirus

We are not out of the woods yet. Although daily new cases of Covid-19 in the U.S. have been declining since January, the number of cases last week was still more than 50,000 per day. This puts the country in a vulnerable position to experience another boom, says dr. Anthony Fauci – what exactly is happening in Europe. The good news is that people in the US get vaccinated relatively quickly. The bad news is that extremely contagious variants are still a threat. Until then, the U.S. should not soften restrictions until Covid-19 case numbers drop to at least below 10,000 a day, Fauci said.

3. 2020 election

Officials found a recording in December of then-President Trump’s call to a Georgia investigating officer in a garbage can on her device. Trump urged the investigator in the call to expose ‘dishonesty’ in the absentee ballots in the state’s most populous province. The audio provides another example of Trump’s efforts to provoke false allegations of widespread voter fraud and to influence election officials in Georgia as they confirm results. Meanwhile, Republicans in several swing states are filing false fraud claims to promote measures that will make it harder to vote. Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams called a similar effort in her state “a Jim Crow redux in a suit and tie.”

4. Myanmar

Myanmar security forces killed dozens of protesters yesterday. It was one of the deadliest days since the army seized power in a coup, bringing the death toll to at least 126 people to the coup. The military junta also instituted martial law in six territories after several China-funded factories were set on fire during protests. It is unclear who is behind the fires. Anti-coup protesters were suspicious of China, with protests directed at the Chinese embassy in Myanmar’s largest city, and protesters accusing Beijing of supporting the coup and the junta. China did not directly condemn the military takeover, but backed a UN Security Council statement condemning violence against peaceful protesters.

Sarah Everard

Women’s rights activists in the UK are furious over how the Metropolitan Police in London on Saturday broke up a peaceful vigilance for Sarah Everard, a 33-year-old man who was killed while walking in the city this month. That the man accused of killing her is a serving member of the same police force only added fuel. The randomness of Everard’s disappearance has led to a national settlement of women’s rights in the United Kingdom. Thousands of women have recounted their own experiences of being intimidated or harassed while walking alone at night.
