Chicago police and suburban Evanston say at least four people were killed, including the gunman, and at least four others were critically injured during a shooting in both cities on Saturday.
Police originally reported that four victims were killed in the shooting, but a woman shot in an IHOP restaurant in Evanston is still fighting for her life on Sunday morning, according to an updated statement from authorities.
The man who was allegedly responsible for the shooting, identified as 32-year-old Jason Nightengale, was shot dead during a shootout with police outside the Evanston restaurant, which ended a string of killings that shocked the city. has.
The shooting started at about 13:50 on Saturday in the 5300 block of South East End Avenue when Nightengale entered a parking garage and fired shots at a 30-year-old man who was sitting in a vehicle.
The man, who was later confirmed as a student at the University of Chicago, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Chicago police.
About 30 minutes later, Nightengale entered an apartment building in the 4900 block of South East End Avenue. He fired shots at a woman who served as a security guard at the building. She was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Another 77-year-old woman was in the building and was about to pick up her mail when she was hit by a gunfire. She is in a critical condition at the University of Chicago Medical Center, police said.
The gunman then moved down East End Avenue to another building and, according to police, pulled out a gun on a male victim, whom he knew. The man pushed the individual into his apartment and demanded the keys to his vehicle and fled the scene in a red Toyota sedan.
At around 15:45, the suspect drove to the 9300 block of South Halsted Street and entered a shop where he was announcing a robbery. Police say he then fired shots and hit a 20-year-old man in the head. That man was taken to Christ Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An 81-year-old woman in the store was shot in the back and neck and was taken to Christ Hospital, where she is in critical condition.
Around 5pm, the gunman struck again and this time shot a 15-year-old girl who was driving in a vehicle in the 10300 block of South Halsted Street. The girl was hit in the head and taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she is in critical condition.
Just five minutes later, Nightengale fired shots at a Chicago police vehicle investigating the previous shooting at the CVS location and hitting the vehicle. No one was hit during the incident.
Then Nightengale allegedly drove north to a CVS pharmacy near the Chicago-Evanston border, announcing a robbery Saturday night. After firing at least one shot there, which hit no one, he fled across the street to an IHOP restaurant.
