The winners of numerous film and TV categories will be announced on Saturday 10 April during a virtual ceremony.
The 2021 Directors Guild Awards are underway, and winners will be announced in numerous film and TV categories.
Like many other awards over the past year, the DGA Awards virtually take place, with members watching the proceedings via streaming video.
Thomas Schlamme, president of the DGA, opened the event by acknowledging the unusual circumstances of the season for pandemic awards. “Storytelling prevailed,” Schlamme said, speaking from the guild’s theater on Sunset Boulevard. “Your work has offered you comfort and escape … and we have overcome the challenging task of getting our industry back on track.”
The director is nominated by directors Minarisee Lee Isaac Chung, Promising young womansee Emerald Fennell, Manksee David Fincher, Trial of the Chicago 7Aaron Sorkin and Nomadlandis Chloé Zhao.
The DGA, traditionally one of Hollywood’s most male-dominated guilds, nominated two women, Zhao and Fennell, in its directorial category for the first time. Zhao is also the first woman of color to be nominated in the category for directors. In addition, two women – Radha Blank and Regina King – are nominated in the director category for the first time as a director. And on the TV side, the guild has handed out a number of nominations to female directors, including one to the late Lynn Shelton for her work on Small fires everywhere.
Apart from the socially distant format, other memories of COVID-19 appeared throughout the series, such as then Lesli Linka Glatter, who won the dramatic award for directing Showtime’s Homeland, admits that she stands behind her, ‘my whole, completely vaccinated director team’ and then presenter Dee Rees shouts at people who have been through the pandemic.
Some winners took the opportunity to make a point of greater cultural issues in their acceptance speeches, with Schlamme talking about voting rights after his victory in the variety shows for HBO Max’s A specific western wing to take advantage of when we all vote. After Melina Matsoukas won the Commercial Direction Award for her Beats by Dr. Won Dre-spot, “You Love Me”, won, she thanks the headphone brand for “standing by and for black people. Thank you for recognizing the culture … when so many others will not . ‘
The DGA function nominees often overlap with the Film Academy’s choices in the directing category, with at least four of the five candidates repeating the Oscar nominations. Indeed, this year nominated all the nominated theater films except Aaron Sorkin, the best director Oscar. Fifteen of the last 17 winners of the DGA’s award have won the Oscar.
