1 killed, 2 wounded in Long Island grocery store shooting; person of interest in general

According to a shooting Tuesday at a New York grocery store, one person was killed and two others were injured.

Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder identified the person who died as a 49-year-old man during an afternoon rally. The two other victims were taken to hospitals in the area and were on alert, he said. Their names and conditions were not immediately disclosed by authorities.

Ryder said the shooting happened in an upstairs office in a Stop & Shop supermarket on Long Island.

According to the commissioner, Gabriel Dewitt Wilson, 30, has been identified as a person of interest who remains at large. He last saw him wearing a black baseball cap and a black sweatshirt in the westbound direction of the Hempstead Turnpike.

Authorities were still trying to confirm whether he was a current or former employee of the grocery store.

Wilson is suspected of fleeing the shooting and possibly jumping on a nearby bus to escape, NBC New York reported. Details of a motive have not been released.

Schools in the West Hempstead district have been shut down after drivers announced there were police activities in the area.

The shooting on Long Island comes less than a week after authorities said a gunman killed eight people at a FedEx plant in Indianapolis last Thursday before killing himself. Four others who were shot and another who were injured were taken to hospitals. Officials identified the gunman as 19-year-old Brandon Scott Hole, a former FedEx employee who killed himself at the scene.

The incident was also the second fatal shooting in a grocery store in less than a month. On March 22, suspect Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa is accused of walking into a supermarket in Boulder, Colo, killing 10 people, including a police officer. He is charged with ten counts of first-degree murder.

In 2021, according to NBC News, there were at least six major shootings, including those in Indianapolis and Boulder.
