Zynga announced today that it has acquired Torchlight 3 developer Echtra Games.
The terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.
The San Francisco-based Echtra, founded in 2016, has so far sent out just one game, last year’s Torch 3.
However, Zynga’s statement makes it clear that the company’s interest is strengthened by the pedigree of developers such as Echtra founder Max Schaefer, who worked on the first two Diablo games and all three torch titles.
“Max and his team at Echtra Games are responsible for some of the most legendary gameplay features ever created, and they are experts in the action-RPG genre and cross-platform development,” said Frank Gibeau, CEO of Zynga. said.
He added: “This acquisition will help expand our iconic licenses and brands from mobile to PCs and consoles, and will help further expand Zynga’s total accountable market.”
To begin with, Echtra will partner with its fellow Zynga studio NaturalMotion on “a new, yet announced platform platform RPG.”
A Zynga representative told GamesIndustry.biz there would be no redundancies associated with the acquisition.
Zynga president of the publication, Bernard Kim, tells GamesIndustry.biz last month that the company was planning to continue acquiring the acquisitions after finding success in recent years by adding developers such as Gram Games, Small Giant, Peak Games and Rollic.
“We remain aggressive and curious about the acquisition of more game studios and technology ventures that we believe can be added to Zynga,” Kim said.
