Zack Snyder reveals his plans for a film directed at Ryan Choi as The Atom after the character was introduced in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
Zack Snyder has revealed that he originally had plans for an Atom movie to be played in China with Ryan Zheng (also known as Zheng Kai) as Ryan Choi.
Talk to Grace Randolph Beyond The Trailer, Snyder discussed how he hoped so Justice League can be used as a springboard for a China-based Atom film. In the past, Snyder has mentioned that he was interested in creating an Atom spin-off, and he went into detail with Randolph about how he would like to execute the idea. His plans include that the film should balance both English and Chinese languages to create a larger scale for the project. In addition, Snyder hoped to convey to fans the importance of Chinese heroes, emphasizing that it is not just “that this Chinese character is in the movie, but that we are in HIS movie.”
This is not the first time Snyder has talked about his interest in narratives that transcend language boundaries. His upcoming film Army of Thieves, a prelude to the summer Army of the Dead, will be an English, French and German-language film. For Snyder, this is an important technique that makes these films feel like they have more international representation.
Marvel recently released the preview and poster for its first movie starring a Chinese, Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings. The trailer was well received, and many fans expressed their excitement at seeing a Chinese hero in a major superhero production. As Randolph noted, Snyder had all these plans for the Atom in 2015. On that, Snyder pointed out that fans would already be able to see the China-based Atom movie if this movie was pursued.
In Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the character of Ryan Choi was introduced as a scientist working with Cyborg’s father, Silas Stone, in Star Labs. Although it was a small role, the cast of Zheng did create the possibility for future performances. Snyder’s vision for the DC Extended Universe was famously filled with annoyances and possible threads to explore. This storytelling structure led to the creation of the Snyder Cut and recently led to the subsequent fans of #RestoreTheSnyderVerse, which Snyder himself supports.
