Zack Snyder addresses CGI removal of Henry Cavill’s Superman mustache

Zack Snyder addresses the horrific CGI removal of Henry Cavill’s Superman mustache that drew in Joss Whedon’s Justice League cut.

Three years later Justice League in theaters, Zack Snyder addresses the CGI removal of Henry Cavill’s Superman mustache. The Justice League Snyder Cut finally arrived on HBO Max, and it was a long road to the film’s release. After Joss Whedon started the production of Justice League, the film underwent extensive reviews, which contributed Justice League flop at the counter and with critics. 2017’s Justice League was criticized for several reasons, but the film’s faint CGI was a major complaint.

Two of the most notable examples are Steppenwolf and Superman. Steppenwolf’s design has been completely changed for the theatrical cut, as Warner Bros. Snyder’s version considered too narrow. Steppenwolf’s entire design has been changed to Whedon’s version, but only one part of Superman has been adapted with CGI, his lip. Because Justice League refilling several scenes once Whedon took over, Cavill was called in to re-record scenes as the Man of Steel. The only problem was that Cavill filmed Mission: Impossible – Failure, in which he has a mustache. Since Paramount did not allow him to shave it Justice League‘s effects, the effects department used to remove it digitally. The result was less than perfect.

People have been criticizing the poorly erased mustache for years, and now Snyder himself is commenting on the matter. In an interview with MTV News, Snyder was asked what he thought when he first saw Cavill’s CGI’d face Justice League. The full comments of the director can be read below.

“I only saw it in memes. That was funny, because part of me was glad we could be the total legacy of the hard work he’s done over the last ten years, you know? It’s sad. to think that this might be the last view people had of Superman was with it, whatever it is. ‘

Of course, in the Justice League Snyder Cut, Snyder did not include the footage with Cavill’s CGI lip. In fact, the director refused to use anything in his film that Whedon filmed during the 2017 filming. Several of the problems of the play were solved in the Snyder Cut. Kal-El’s story, as well as each of the superheroes, was more complicated. The Snyder Cut contains a few additional Superman scenes, some of which reproduce the footage Man of steel and Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. Superman eventually also had to wear his famous black suit after his resurrection, which many people wanted to see.

The mustache debacle was one of the most discussed issues in 2017s Justice League, so it only makes sense that Snyder would respond to that now that his film is on HBO Max. If the Snyder Cut hadn’t been released, it really could have been the latest version of Cavill’s Superman fans. Warner Bros. not interested in seeing Snyder’s unmade Justice League sequels, and a reload of Superman is already in development, which is believed to play a black actor. Cavill’s replay of Superman is probably over, but at least the Justice League Snyder Cut gave viewers an unchanged version of the actor’s face.
