As more people cut out the traditional cable, Google’s YouTube TV has become the option to stream live television. This year, the service will get even more features, including the arrival of 4K streaming on YouTube TV.
In a blog post this morning, YouTube confirms some planned updates for its core products, including YouTube itself, Music and also YouTube TV. One of the biggest takeaways in the report is that YouTube TV will soon add support for 4K streaming.
Although a specific release window is not mentioned, YouTube TV will be launching a new add-on package in the not-too-distant future that allows for three new features. First, it includes the ability to watch 4K quality YouTube TV streams, obviously if the broadcaster has the ability to do so. 4K broadcasts are still rare, but it will become more popular in the future, especially as big events like the Super Bowl have tried to do 4K broadcast.
In addition to 4K streaming, this new add-on bundle will also allow you to download recordings to YouTube TV. We first spotted this feature yesterday, as the basis for the feature is currently available in the YouTube TV app on Android.
Finally, this add-on package will also give families the opportunity to use YouTube TV on multiple devices at once. As it stands today, a family can watch the service on up to three devices simultaneously, with a fourth addition kicking off one of the previous viewers. It is probably not very common for households to reach this limit on a regular basis, but the option to extend simultaneous flows would certainly be welcome.
At this time, it’s unclear how much YouTube TV subscribers will cost for this add-on package. The service starts at $ 65 / month.
