YouTube took action against President Donald Trump, banning new videos from being uploaded to his channel for at least seven days, citing violations of his policies and “concerns about the continuing potential for violence.”
This is the latest action against Trump after the deadly riot at the US Capitol last week by a pro-Trump mob. Twitter and Facebook both also suspended or blocked the president’s accounts.
YouTube has issued a ‘strike’ on Trump’s channel, saying that comments will also be disabled indefinitely. The company also said it removed new content posted Tuesday.
Trump is being ousted by Democrats and some Republicans, including Republican no. 3 in the House, Rep. Liz Cheney, blamed for inciting violence at the Capitol.
“The president of the United States has gathered this crowd, gathered the crowd and lit the flame of this attack. All that followed was his doing,” Cheney, R-Wyoming, said in a statement Tuesday.
“There has never been a greater betrayal by a President of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution,” she said, adding that she supported the accusation.
Trump took no responsibility on Tuesday for inciting riots that killed five people, including a Capitol police officer who died after being injured in physical confrontations, and a woman who was fatally shot by police. a crowd tried to break into a part of the building.
There was a call in Congress to remove Trump after the riot.
The Democratic-controlled House passed a resolution Tuesday night calling on Vice President Mike Pence to call for the 25th amendment, which Pence said he would not do. “Under our Constitution, the 25th Amendment is not a way to punish or occupy” and its use would set a terrible precedent, the vice president said in a letter.
The House vote was 223 to 205, largely along biased lines. But there are also calls to accuse Trump a second time, and a growing number of Republicans have publicly endorsed the president’s accusation.
In addition to the fact that Trump spoke to the crowd before the violence, Trump has repeatedly and without justification claimed that the election was fraudulent or stolen, of which there is no evidence. The mob stormed and looted the Capitol as Congress formally counted the election votes of Joe Biden’s victory.
House President Nancy Pelosi, D-California, said before Tuesday night’s vote on the House floor: “The facts are very clear: the president has called for this inflammatory attack.”
