Young mother is Triangle’s first traffic death of 2021 :: WRAL.com

A New Year’s Day accident on North Interstate 85 in Orange County has killed a 30-year-old mother of five, according to authorities.

Shadeshia Brooks of Graham was driving on I-85 in the direction of Durham when she lost control of her Ford pickup near the Interstate 40 junction near Hillsborough shortly after 1:30 p.m.

The bakkie walked to the right of the highway, hit a handrail and overturned. Brooks, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the truck and killed, authorities said.

Authorities said speed was not a factor in the crash, but they are still trying to determine if road conditions played a role.

North I-85 was closed for several hours when authorities investigated the crash, but the highway was open again at 4 p.m.
