Fox News anchor Chris Wallace confronted Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Sunday, pointing out that the Republican governor was outspoken during the Biden administration over migrant child abuse, but that he was silent on the issue during Donald Trump’s presidency.
With conservatives describing the recent upsurge of underage minors on the southern border as an uncomfortable disaster and crisis, Abbott rushed to hold a press conference last week after government officials received some tips that migrant children be sexually abused in a temporary shelter in San Antonio. .
“These problems are a by – product of President Biden’s open border policy and the lack of planning for the consequences of the disastrous policy,” Abbott told reporters outside the facility: “Children at this facility are being sexually assaulted.”
‘In short, this facility is a nightmare for health and safety. “The government of Biden is now leading the abuse of children,” the governor concluded. “To end this abuse, the government of Biden must close this facility immediately.”
During his interview with Abbott on Fox News SundayWallace, however, made the fact that the Trump-boosting Republican had remained silent just a few years earlier when it came to light that more than a thousand migrant children had reported sexual abuse and harassment while in federal custody.
“You reported this week that there are cases of sexual abuse at the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, Texas, which currently houses more than 1,600 children,” the Fox News moderator said. ‘But the head of a non-profit organization providing legal services to immigrants said:’ The only reason Abbott now acts as if he cares about the children in these facilities is for political reasons. ”
Wallace continued: ‘Governor, there have been thousands of complaints of sexual abuse at migrant shelters during the Trump years. Not to say that what’s going on right now is right, but we could not see a single case of you complaining and shouting it out when President Trump was president. ”
Abbott, meanwhile, largely eluded Wallace’s question, claiming that there were “multiple differences between what happened in the Trump administration” and the current White House.
After insisting that the Trump administration “stayed with him” on issues involving detained migrants and that the allegations of abuse were “lodged with federal agencies,” the governor then set aside any criticism of his previous silence.
“But do not fall prey to Democrats and others and say, ‘Well, Abbott has not complained about this before,'” he concluded. “What they need to focus on is exactly what I was paying attention to last month in Dallas, Texas, where I then pointed out that there will be cases of child sexual abuse.”
