‘You do what you have to do’: An airline passenger at PDX strikes after children kicked her seat

A 29-year-old woman is facing a charge of assault after police said she attacked another woman on a Spirit Airlines flight that had just landed at Portland International Airport on Sunday.

The trigger for the alleged assault: children kicking in the back of her seat.

Daydrena Jaslin Walker-Williams took her luggage out of an overhead trash can and then punched fellow passenger Nataly Hernandez several times and left Hernandez with a bleeding lip and bumps on her head, according to a statement likely to be caused.

The two children of Hernandez, aged 7 and 3, reportedly witnessed the assault.

Walker-Williams admitted that she “hit Hernandez in the face 2 to 3 times with her fist”, according to the complaint. She told police “she was upset by Ms Hernandez’s children kicking her seat back and saying she told Ms Hernandez ‘to tell her children to stop it.’ “She said Hernandez ignored her and later hit her on the shoulder.”

Walker-Williams said she did not tell an air hostess of the shoulder head because her ‘first reaction was to fight’, according to the statement. Officials then told Walker-Williams that other people on the plane saw her bumping into Hernandez, but did not see Hernandez hit her on the shoulder. Walker-Williams’ answer: “You do what you have to do.”

The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office charged Walker-Williams with fourth-degree assault and harassment.
