Yankees give Domingo German a second chance after suspension

Domingo German is going to get another chance with the Yankees after serving his suspension for violating the protocol of Major League Baseball’s domestic violence.

Aaron Boone said on Wednesday that he, general manager Brian Cashman, and Carlos Mendoza, bank coach, had spoken to German to welcome him back from his ban, but added that he would not guarantee anything this spring.

“We know he paid a significant price from a career standpoint because he has now missed a full season plus,” the manager said in a Tampa Zoom call. ‘Hopefully it’s behind us. We feel he is in a good place to get in, and now he has to go out to revive his career and to compete for a place in this team. … It’s been a very long year coming back. ‘

The Yankees need as many quality arms as they can get to back Gerrit Cole, and if the German can regain the form he had in 2019, when he won 18 games and threw 143 overs before his suspension, it would be a boost.

But German must show that he can still be effective on the hill – and stay out of trouble off the field. He was suspended for 81 matches in January 2020 for violating the protocol and missed the entire season, announcing that he was leaving baseball – although he later took it back and hit it during the winter ball in the Dominican Republic.

“There was definitely nothing promised,” Boone said of German’s role in the team. ‘We’re going to be there and try to be supportive, because we can move forward to not only hopefully get the best out of himself on the hill and between the lines, but also to become the best he can be off the field. ”
