TAMPA – If there is any doubt as to why the Yankees kept Domingo German after serving his MLB ban, he showed again on Wednesday what the team still sees in the right hand.
German excelled in his second outing of the spring, throwing three innings and hitting three in a 6-5 win over the Pirates at Steinbrenner Field.
“He’s looking at the role out there,” manager Aaron Boone said of the right-hand man, trying to earn a spot in the rotation. “We are very excited about where he is.”
So too German.
“I think it was the perfect two outings for me,” German said through an interpreter. “I haven’t faced big league players in a long time, so I want to attack the zone and get it right.”
German needed just 31 spots to get through his outing – a day after Deivi Garcia also impressed in his second start of the spring.
But he said he did not think of the competition: ‘For me, [my focus] is just to do my job and let the office decide. ”
The Yankees saw their first look at their high lever jars on Wednesday and the results were mostly encouraging.
From Aroldis Chapman showing off his new splitter, to Darren O’Day hitting hot with his delivery, to Chad Green hitting the sidelines in his one inning of the job, the trio looks as good as advertised.
The exception was Justin Wilson, who allowed two homers and could not come out of the sixth innings.
Chapman threw in the top nineties and broke out the splits he developed last season, giving Wilmer Difo a very effective one. O’Day follows with his tough delivery – and fast ball in the mid-80s – in the fifth.
“Everyone has a different virtue,” Chapman said through an interpreter when asked about O’Day. ‘He’s found a way to be effective, and at the end of the day he’s finding a way to get guys out – just like me. We as players are all different. The bottom line is to get the job done. ”
