Xiaomi’s new Waterfall Display concept phone looks like a scientific film prop

Xiaomi today unveiled a new concept smartphone that elevates curved screens to the next level. The device builds on the expertise that Xiaomi has gained with the Mi Mix Alpha concept, and has a square waterfall screen that rotates seamlessly around all sides.

We first heard of the new concept device in April last year when Xiaomi filed a patent for a phone with a waterfall screen and a camera under the screen. The company finally unveiled the device in a video posted Weibo. As you can see in the attached video, the new concept device has no rings. Instead, the screen on the device rotates around all four sides, giving it a futuristic look.

Like the Mi Mix Alpha, the new Xiaomi Concept seems to use a customized version of MIUI that illuminates the left and right edges for incoming notifications. On top of that, the device seems to have all its status bar icons on the right side, giving it a cleaner look on the front. Since the device has no physical buttons on the sides, it probably uses the same pressure-sensitive virtual side buttons as the Mi Mix Alpha. At the rear, the concept device has a rectangular camera module with a single camera and a flash.

Along with the video, Xiaomi also shared a teaser image for the Waterfall Display concept that reveals additional information. According to the image, the device has a unibody design that is completely without ports. Its innovative performance bends 88 ° over the edges, and Xiaomi claims to take advantage of several groundbreaking advances in bending and lamination technology. Furthermore, the image shows that Xiaomi filed 46 innovative patents during its development.

Although I am a proponent of the overall look, I am concerned about the durability and the ability to accurately identify casual touch. The latter can make it an absolute nightmare to use. What do you take from Xiaomi’s new Waterfall Display phone? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
