Xiaomi has been dominating the budget for smartphones for some time. Even the flagship phones are usually cheaper than the competition offers. But last year, the Mi 10 Ultra hit the $ 1,000 mark, and now it looks like the Chinese business wants to go beyond the premium price barrier.
Xiomi CEO Lei Jun asked followers on Weibo if they would buy a 10,000 yuan ($ 1,548) phone from the company. He also asked them what a Xiaomi phone with this price should look like.
The question could be a hint for an emerging expensive Xiaomi device, possibly the company’s first foldable phone that’s been up and running for a while. Then it may just be that the company is testing the waters before deciding to jump into the ultra-premium smartphone segment.
This is not the first time that June indicates that Xiaomi wants to break away from its reputation of being a budget for smartphones. The company even started selling its Mi 10 flagship in India last year, indicating that it is willing to try its luck in the premium space, in a country where it has its strong market share at the back of entry-level devices built.
