Xiaomi Announces Portable Concept Phone with Square Screen

Xiaomi portless phone with four curved waterfall screens

  • Xiaomi has announced a new concept phone with a square curved display and a port design.
  • The company has 46 technical patents for it.
  • There is no word on when and if Xiaomi intends to commercialize this technology.

Xiaomi has announced a new concept phone with a portless design without any buttons or other openings.

The star of the show here is the new ‘Quad-curved Waterfall Display’. According to the company, it achieves a curve of 88 degrees on all four sides of the phone, which eliminates no frame or edges.

To create the unique display, Xiaomi used state-of-the-art glass processing equipment, a 800 degree temperature hot bending process, four different polishing tools, and more than ten complex polishing procedures.

It looks a lot like Vivo’s Apex concept phone which is the first to launch a portable design in 2019. The only difference is that the screen on the Apex phones bends at the left and right edges, while the screen on the new Xiaomi concept phone also offers curves at the top and bottom.

Elsewhere, Xiaomi’s new concept phone incorporates third-generation camera technology, as the screen swings to the sides, leaving no room for a pop-up module. It also includes wireless charging capability, eSIM support and pressure-sensitive touch sensors.

The company claims to have 46 technical patents for the entire machine.

Xiaomi portless concept phone: is it practical?

It is unlikely that Xiaomi will put such a design into production any time soon. We do not think the world is ready for homeless phones that do not have a SIM tray, volume keys, microSD card slot and other important hardware features.

We also do not like waterfall exhibits. They are more prone to breakage and do not adapt well to the contents. Not to forget unwanted fake touches that can make the actions of the phone go wrong.
