WoW finally makes you ride a huge tree and it looks amazing

World of Warcraft’s new Chains of Domination update for the Shadowlands expansion adds a brand new mountain that is a giant antique tree that you can ride and pedal around. Eventually. This is probably my most anticipated part of the update (I’m just kidding a bit).

At BlizzConline, I spoke with WoW introductory game designer Jeremy Feasel about this mountain, including how it came to be, why it is so unique, and how it connects to the wider history.

Blizzard launched a player survey some time ago to ask fans what they want to see from a new mountain so they can vote to determine what it will be. The idea was to work closely with the community in a new way to help players have a greater sense of connection with Azeroth and the Warcraft universe. Some of the other options in the recording were a giant book you could ride on, a kitten of jelly, a caterpillar and a creepy spider.

The Wandering Ancient was the most popular choice by far, Feasel said. “By a wide margin, everywhere, a giant treadmill has won,” he said.

Fans of The Lord of the Rings probably know big walks with the Ents, but the Ancients are also a central part of Warcraft Lore and Night Elves.

“There’s this mythology about riding on top of a giant tree,” Feasel said of portraying giant walking trees in media such as The Lord of the Rings. “But also, Night Elves has this long and extensive information about ancient protectors and … it goes back to Warcraft 3. I feel like there’s a sect of the player base that has always wanted to ride one of those things… finally got their way. ‘

The Wandering Ancient is one of WoW’s greatest mechanics ever, and as such, Feasel said players can expect it to feel very unique in that regard. “It’s the mountain to tread over the landscape,” he said.

The Wandering Ancient is also unique in that it will change color with the seasons – check out the animated GIF to see it in action. In addition, the tree shakes the tree, and the different leaves will depend on the season. Feasel teased that the Wander Ancient Mountain would also contain some “unique extra little things” that would be announced later.

One of these surprises may have already been revealed. If you look closely, you will see that one of the mountain ideas that did not get enough votes – the caterpillars – actually has a home on top of Wandering Ancient mount. The bug was placed in a place that looks like it controls the mountain, which is a nice touch.

As part of BlizzConline, the studio released an in-depth video for the Wandering Ancient in which developers discuss disciplines on how they brought the mountain to the game from start to finish. This is an impressive video and it really shows how special and unique the mountain is. Watch the video below.

The Wandering Ancient is not the only new mountain coming to Shadowlands in the Chains of Domination update. There will also be a range of new flying mounts, and you can see them below.

Chains of Domination is the first major update from Shadowlands since the expansion launched last year. It will feature a new 10-boss attack, an eight-boss mega-dungeon that will have a hard mode, additional PvP content, changes to the Maw and more. As for the story, players will eventually be able to fight Sylvanas, which is a battle that has been going on for years.
